Day Four - Mawley Hall

Sh0296_2It's day four, the schedule is rolling from days into night-shoots.  We've set up outside Mawley Hall, a perfectly-preserved Queen Anne manor house in the West Midlands of England, perched on a hilltop in a eye-poppingly pastoral English landscape. You can't see the view or the main house in this shot, maybe I'll try to find you one later. We've waited for the sun to go down before shooting, so as not to have any direct sunlight, and the afterglow-lit view from where Gillian and Danny are standing, of rolling hills dotted with sheep, and broad sweeps of forest  is pretty breathtaking. It was a very cold, clear night, with the  temperature plummeting towards freezing - so cold in fact that our digital sound recorder has just broken down and Cuong is recording guide sound on a little DV video camera. Later that night we're planning to shoot a scene with a crowd of party-people jumping fully-clothed into the outdoor swimming pool and I'm a touch worried about having lots of wet background artists waiting around in the cold. Gillian is wearing a flimsy silk dress, and toughing out the cold for this shot, where she and Danny arrive at Misha's party, in the first act of our movie. Note the director and the DOP Chris Seager (operating the camera) and every one else wearing thick mountain gear! Don't worry, we made sure Gillian and the rest of the cast were kept warm between takes!

Day One

This was our first day of shooting. The location is Alice's apartment - Alice being Gillian's character in Straightheads. See the guy in the Hawaiian shirt? He's the High Priest and Creator of the Shooting Schedule, a basalt pillar of strength and discipline, otherwise known as Jack Ravenscroft, First Assistant Director. Jack truly run tings, and he's so good it's almost worrying.
But notice the furrowed brow. The reason is that we're already two hours behind schedule. Not good on Day One of shooting. OK, it's my fault for shooting too many angles of Gillian walking into her apartment. So Jack's thinking, here I am, with another first-time movie director who wants to shoot seven shades of shite out of every scene... but Jack is too much of a pro and a gentleman to actually say this to me on my first day of shooting. Did we make up the time? Of course we did. We ditched a couple of scenes, shot one scene from a single angle, and we were back on track. Easy. Of course I lay awake that night thinking about all the mistakes I'd made and the scenes and shots I'd dropped... Beating myself up over and over, all night. Well, for about five minutes at least...

Rascal's prototype

The Quicktime below shows a test-clip of a VERY early prototype of Rascal our prosthetic stag, designed by Paul Hyett our ingenious special fx guy. Rascal got a lot more sophisticated and furry later on, but this vid made me laugh when I first saw it so I guess you might too.

Dsc00871_3The piccy shows Paul (on the left, with his creature-team) carrying an almost complete Rascal with his animatronic guts hanging out, one drizzly Saturday dawn in the Wyre Forest. The hyper-caffeinated beacon of humanity and compassion on the right is none other than Jack Ravenscroft, towering pillar of fortitude and prince amongst 1st ADs.

Welcome to Straightblog!

Over the last ten months we've been making "Straightheads", a dark and intensely disturbing thriller starring Gillian Anderson and Danny Dyer, coming to UK cinemas early next year...

This blog will follow the final push to getting the film finished and the months leading up to the release…

As writer and director of the film, I’ll be giving you an inside look into the process, and sharing with you my burning excitement / bleak despair / overwhelming joy / random thoughts as the release date gets closer. I haven’t done any heavy-duty bloggage before so bear with me if it’s a little ropey to begin with.

The blog will be updated throughout the year and include video diaries, cast and crew stuff, plus plenty of exclusive content and hopefully some sneak-preview footage closer to release time.Skull_3

We’ll also have some special guest editors on the blog, but for the main it’ll just be me, and er… you.

Dan Reed

Writer & Director, Straightheads.
